Step by step
Swatch the stitch pattern
Work a small sample in the actual stitch pattern. Lace and texture can behave very differently from basic single crochet gauge.
Check: Your sample includes at least one full repeat of the stitch pattern.
Compare hook sizes
Try the recommended hook and one nearby size. A larger hook can open lace, while a smaller hook can sharpen raised texture.
Check: You can see which hook gives better fabric for the project.
Watch stitch height
Tall stitches can lean or stretch if the first yarn over is too loose. Keep loops even on the hook without choking the stitch.
Check: Tall stitches stand evenly without looking stretched at the top.
Use blocking as part of the fabric
Pin lace open gently so the spaces become clear. For texture, shape the piece without flattening raised stitches too aggressively.
Check: The blocked swatch shows the intended openwork or texture clearly.
Decide what the fabric needs
A shawl may need drape and openness. A bag or pillow may need stronger texture and less stretch. Let the project decide the fabric.
Check: You can describe whether this fabric should be airy, firm, stretchy, or structured.
Practice
- Make two small swatches with different hook sizes.
- Block half of a lace swatch and leave half unblocked to compare.
- Photograph texture before and after blocking so you can judge the change.
Common mistakes
The lace looks messy instead of open.
Block the swatch and check whether your chains and tall stitches are consistent.
Raised texture disappears.
Use a smaller hook or lighter blocking pressure so the fabric keeps dimension.
The fabric is too stiff.
Try a larger hook or a yarn with more drape.
