Step by step
Find the second chain from the hook
Skip the loop on the hook and count one chain below it. Insert your hook into the next chain, which is the second chain from the hook.
Check: The hook is inserted into a chain stitch, not the loop already on your hook.
Yarn over
Wrap the working yarn over the hook from back to front while the hook is inside the chain.
Check: The hook catches the yarn cleanly in the groove.
Pull up a loop
Draw the yarn through the chain. You should now have two loops on the hook.
Check: There are exactly two loops sitting on the hook.
Yarn over again
Wrap the yarn over the hook one more time. Keep your hands relaxed so the loops do not tighten too much.
Check: The yarn over is ready to pass through both loops.
Pull through both loops
Pull the yarn over through both loops on the hook. One single crochet stitch is complete.
Check: Only one loop remains on your hook.
Practice
- Chain 12 and work single crochet across the row.
- Count your stitches at the end of the row.
- Make 3 rows and compare the width of the first and last row.
Common mistakes
You keep adding stitches.
Count each row and make sure you do not work into the turning chain by accident.
You lose stitches at the edges.
Mark the first and last stitch of the row until you can spot them easily.
The fabric feels stiff.
Relax your yarn hand and let each loop sit on the hook shaft before pulling through.
