Step by step
Finish the row
Work the final stitch of the row and pause before turning. Count your stitches while the row is still facing you.
Check: Your row has the expected number of stitches.
Chain one
Make one chain stitch. In beginner single crochet, this turning chain gives your next row enough height.
Check: You have one chain above the row edge.
Turn the work
Rotate the swatch like turning a page. Keep the hook in your hand and let the fabric flip so the next row faces you.
Check: The working yarn is ready at the side of the row.
Find the first stitch
Look for the first full stitch at the edge. Insert your hook into that stitch unless your pattern says otherwise.
Check: You are not inserting into the turning chain by mistake.
Work across and count again
Single crochet across the row and count at the end. Repeating the same count is how straight edges happen.
Check: The new row has the same stitch count as the previous row.
Practice
- Make a 10-stitch swatch and work 6 rows.
- Count stitches at the end of every row.
- Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row for practice.
Common mistakes
The edge leans inward.
You may be skipping the first or last stitch. Mark both edge stitches for a few rows.
The edge flares outward.
You may be adding stitches into the turning chain. Count before starting the next row.
The turn feels bulky.
Keep the turning chain relaxed and avoid pulling it tight before the first stitch.
